BEARS: Black Economy

Since blue economy was derived from the beautiful ‘blue’ colour of seas and oceans connoting the numerous opportunities in maritime and other related activities, black economy represents the highly polluted, dirt-filled waters which aptly describes the waterways in Lagos State. Despite the rich presence of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), the waterways in the state are usually filled with dirt, usually plastic bags and bottles, while they also serve as toilets for riverine communities. The photo above was taken at the popular Liverpool jetty in Apapa, on Tuesday last week.
