Senate Committee On Marine Transport Re-Assures NPA Of Cooperation

The Chairman Senate Committee on Marine Transportation, Senator Ahmed Sanni Yerima has re-assured the Management of the Nigerian Ports Authority of cooperation and support in so far as it is working in conjunction with the demands of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Speaking during the committee’s oversight function  visit to the NPA Headquarters, Marina Lagos, the Chairman admonished management  to ensure  that operations and activities of various agencies within the Nations’ Ports are well laid out and undertaking according to the law of the land.

Senator Yerima further enjoined the managing Director of NPA to ensure that government facilities and resources are well protected as the government of the day cannot afford wastages.

In her welcome address, the MD of NPA Hadiza Bala-Usman appreciated the Senate Committee for their visit, assuring them that all necessary logistics had been put in place to make the oversight function visit a success, especially since it is their statutory right.

The Managing Director of Lekki Port, Mr. Aresh Vashwani who was represented by a director in the organization Mr. John Mastoroudes told the Senate Committee of Marine that the visit was long expected, and that over the years the Lekki Port had surmounted so many obstacles before now adding that in no long a time the Port will begin operation on a day to day basis.

In his own presentation, the Port Manager of Lekki Port Mr. Stephen Heukelom reminded the distinguished visitors that LekkiPort is being sponsored by the Federal Government represented by NPA, Lagos State Government and the Tolaram Group who are the major contributor.

He added that the project is a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) concession which will last for 45years and that at its peak it will create job for over 200.000 people working in and around the complex, and that the Port will commence full operations in December 2019.

Mr. Heukelom who said the company is gradually impacting on its host community through science and sporting activities for the children in the host community, also added that that the Lagos State Government recently issued the company a letter of comfort to confirm its absolute trust in the project.
