  CILT, NIWA, LASWA  Organise  Safety,Investment Workshop On Waterways

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport(CILT) Nigeria in collaboration with the National Inland Waterways Authority(NIWA) and Lagos State Waterways Authority(LASWA) are organizing a one- day maritime modal workshop on Thursday, 4th August,2022 at Four point by Sheraton, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The maiden workshop with the theme as “Optimization of Inland Waterways Transport in Nigeria” is deemed auspicious, according to the organizers, now because of the changing dynamics of global  transportation models   with emphasis on efficiency, environment and cost effective operations.

According to the CILT Vice-President,West and  chairperson workshop committee, Mrs. Margaret Ogbonnah, the workshop seeks to create an interface for regulators, experts and stakeholders in the sector to highlight the potentials of inland waterways transportation as a sustainable panacea to road traffic congestion, reducing emission and providing low cost means of long distance commuting within the city and its environs.

The workshop is expected to feature three papers which are: “The policy thrust of Inland Waterways transport in Nigeria: The Implication to Sustainable Development;” ‘ Investments in Waterways Infrastructure  in Lagos State” and “Inland Waterways Cargo and Passenger Services: The Gains and Pains of Operations.”

 

Mrs Ogbonnah added that practical issues to be discussed include: Practical steps being taken by NIWA and other regulatory agencies to address overlap of inland waterways regulation in Nigeria; Quality , Safety, Security and Environment(QSSE) management approach and mitigation strategies in line with best practices.

Some of the speakers are:chairman, Morbod Group, Barr.( Mrs) Margaret Orakwusi; chairman, Ports Consultative Council(PCC), Otunba Kunle Folarin; Prof. Iyiola Oni,Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and chairman, Institute of Maritime Studies, University of Lagos.

Special guests of honour at the events include, Hon. Patrick Asadu, chairman, House Committee on Waterways, National Assembly; Dr.George Moghalu, managing director, NIWA and Barr.(Mrs) Mfon Usoro, National President, CILT Nigeria.
