The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria has begun a sensitisation programme aimed at promoting a new professional syllabus it launched in May.

The President, ICAN, Mr. Chidi Ajaegbu, told participants at a public enlightenment forum in Lagos that the new syllabus was officially introduced by his immediate predecessor, Alhaji Kabir Mohamed.
According to him, the public sensitisation forum is part of the efforts by the institute to boost stakeholders’ awareness of the new syllabus.
The ICAN president maintained that the institute was doing everything humanly possible to ensure that the organisation competed with global brands.
“We have put in place excellent resources, both internal and external, to make certain that our learning outcomes match with the best global brands,” Ajaegbu said.
“We have benchmarked our study materials with international standards with a view to producing skilled professional accountants and business-ready managers,” he added.
The new curriculum, he noted, was developed and incorporated into a three-stage qualifying examination structure.
He added, “Its form of learning content and competences are: foundation, skill level and professional level. Each of these stages has five subjects except skills level which has six subjects. This implies that all the stages have a total of 16 subjects”.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, Students’ Affairs Committee of ICAN, Mr. Sunday Bammeke, confirmed that the new syllabus would take effect from November 2014.
Bammeke said, “Customarily, the syllabus of the institution is reviewed every five years but in the case of this new syllabus, there is a slight departure because of the need to quickly respond to the dynamism of the profession and the quest to reposition the institute as one of the leading professional accountancy bodies in the African region.
“It therefore suggests that the new syllabus which was launched on May 20th 2014 will take effect from November 2014 and the old syllabus which came into effect in May, 2010 will cease to be in operation.”
He said it was ICAN’s practice to organise a forum to sensitise the general public once it revised its syllabus.
According to him, the Students Affairs Committee has obtained approval of the council to run the stakeholders’ sensitisation programme in six locations across the country, namely: Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, Enugu and Kano.
