The Tin Can Island Port(TCIP), one of the ports managed by the Nigerian Ports Authority(NPA) has recognized five terminal operators operating within the port for their immense contributions to trade facilitation, improved efficiency and economic growth of the port.

The award, tagged Stakeholders’ Award was given to the following terminal operators: Tin Can Island Container Terminal Limited; Josepdam Port Services Limited; Five Star Logistics Limited; Ports and Terminals Multi-services; Ports and Cargo Handling Services.

Speaking during the novel award ceremony at the Tin Can Island Complex office in Lagos, on Wednesday, the Port Manager, Abubakar Sani Isa, said “We are honoring the terminal operators in Tin Can Port because we have witnessed a lot of improvement in cargo handling and delivery services. There has been increased efficiency in ports operations, leading to increased revenue for the government”

He urged them to continue to improve on their services while saying that the award of performance given to them was a token of appreciation for their services.

In his appreciation message, the Assistant Manager, Operations Department, Five Star Logistics Limited, Mr. Andrew-Young Igweonu, noted that the gesture was not just rare, but capable of spurring them to improve on their service delivery.

He said,” It is unprecedented in the history of the port. It can only spur us to do more. We have personal relationship with the current management of the port. We enjoy his open-door policy. The civil service attitude to work is not here. On behalf of all the terminals, we promise to put in more efforts”.

The event featured ceaseless outpouring of performance encomium on the Port Manager’s inspiring leadership style from the stakeholders present.

Following the port concession in May, 2006, TCIP and the then Roll-On and Roll-Off (RORO) port merged to become Tin Can Island Port Complex with five terminals emerging as port concessionaires with different agreements.

With the advent of terminal operators, there have been marked improvements in turnaround time and berth occupancy, with average berth occupancy rate hitting 75 per cent by the end of 2006 to 83 per cent currently.

The terminal operators have also embarked on planned and redevelopment of their terminals with a view to building capacity and remaining competitive.

The port handles diversified cargoes with each terminal operator specializing in unique forms of cargo of dry and wet bulk cargoes, containerized cargoes and RoRo services known as vehicles.
