APM Terminals Apapa has collaborated with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to increase awareness on drug addiction and the negative impact of stigmatisation on drug users and their families.
The terminal operator commemorated the 2023 International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking along with NDLEA under the theme, ‘People First: Stop Stigma And Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention’.
Speaking during an event in Lagos to mark the day, the Health and Safety Manager at APM Terminals Apapa, Felix Ugwuagbo, said the company had partnered NDLEA as part of its awareness of the negative impacts of stigmatisation and discrimination against victims of drugs.
According to him, this year’s campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy, while providing evidence-based, voluntary services for all as well as offering alternatives to punishment while prioritising prevention.
He said the campaign also aimed at combating stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs by promoting language and attitudes that are respectful and non-judgmental.
Ugwuagbo said with counselling, encouragement and support from family members and the society, drug users could overcome their addiction and lead meaningful lives.
Also speaking, the NDLEA Commander, Apapa Special Area Command, Udotong Essien, said the agency offered education and rehabilitation services to drug users.
“We do not just castigate people who abuse drugs but we do our work creatively with distinction and honour. Our role is to make a positive impact in our towns, cities and states so that our country will be a better place to live and work in. To this effect, we have declared war against drug abuse by bringing you all to join in the revolution,” he said.
