WISTA Seek To Empower Women In The Maritime Industry

Women in Shipping Industry and Trade Association (WISTA), Nigeria seeks to empower women in the maritime industry through its commitment towards development of women not only in Nigeria but within the entire African continent.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Shippers’ Council (NSC), Barr.  Bello represented by the Executive Director of the council Mrs. Ada Okan stated WISTA-Nigeria business luncheon and lunch last week. This during Women empowerment programme embarked upon by WISTA he said that they will go a long  way to assist women in their bid to achieve economic independent and improve their participation in public life and in decision making process.

Bello applauded the leadership of the association under Barrister Mrs. Jean Chiazor Anishere and stated that WISTA-Nigeria has been on the frontline of promoting several policies, programmes and projects designed by the federal government for the empowerment of Nigerian women.

Similarly in a paper presented by the managing director comet shipping Agencies Nigeria limited, Mr. pierluigi camodano, stated that the activities of WISTA runs on the concept that training women for leadership will achieve multiple benefits including: equipping them with the skills and tools necessary to lead in all levels, developing their capacity for unionization and group networking and ensuring that women are found at all levels of any organization.

He extolled the efforts of the founding members who have given women in the industry a voice and corporate personality through the association which has gained prominence in the maritime states of Nigeria.

He encouraged WISTA elders to unrelentingly mentor young women to achieve a steady and continuous improvement in the status and progress of members and the women folk in general.

Earlier, in her welcome address, the president WISTA-Nigeria and vice president women in maritime, (WIM) Africa stated that WIM Africa was born out of a desire to give women in the maritime industry a unified voice, worldwide.

She added that although WISTA has not yet been given an opportunity to host maritime women from all around the world as they lost the bid due to the security challenges the country faced at that time which was at its peak, she hopes that in the administration of president Muhammadu Buhari the jinx will be broken.

In her goodwill message, Mrs. Chinwe Ezenwa of OceanServe and Logistics Limited urged women to be more visible in decision making and learn to encourage one another and the younger generation by being transparent and approachable.

After the book was launched awards were given to individuals who have been fundamental to the achievements of WISTA-Nigeria and the recipients were, Mrs. Chinwe Ezenwa, Barr. Hassan Bello, Mr. Greg Ogbeifun and Mr. Pierluigi Carrodano
