In the lexicon of Nigerian politics, few phrases carry as much weight—or invite as much skepticism—as the promise to “empower” the people. Too often, it means a handful of few supporters receiving sewing machines, or envelopes of cash in a choreographed ceremony.
However, when Distinguished Senator Ikeje Asogwa, the representative of Enugu North Senatorial District in the Red Chamber stood before a crowd in Igbo-Etiti and declared that his ambition was to “make many millionaires” in his constituency, he was signaling something different. He was promising scale.
It was at the official launch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign for the forthcoming local government election that Asogwa made his most audacious pledge.
A N2 billion empowerment programme, he announced, would be unveiled in December 2026 to mark his first six months in office.
“I want to set world records,” he told the gathering. “I will do something no senator has ever done in Nigeria. A #2 billion empowerment program will be unveiled when I am six months in office.”
Many party faithfuls believe that going by Senator Ikeje’s behavior and somebody whose word remains his bond, he would take Nsukka Zone to a glorious height.
Senate Asogwa did not travel to Igbo-Etiti merely to make headlines. He came to campaign. He called on the people of the local government to vote for the APC chairmanship candidate, Hon. Martins Ugwu-Amadieze, framing the local election as inseparable from his own legislative agenda.
The appeal was not abstract. Asogwa disclosed that he had appointed 10 legislative assistants in Igbo-Etiti alone, part of a broader constellation of aides spread across the six local governments of the zone. In his model, representation is not a distant abstraction from Abuja; it is a presence in every ward, a network of eyes, ears and hands.
Perhaps the most concrete achievement Asogwa presented to the people of Igbo-Etiti was the revival of the Ninth Mile–Abor Umulugbe–Ukehe- Opi road project. The road had been abandoned, a familiar story in a country where projects die quiet deaths in budget cycles. Senator Asogwa said he met with the Minister of Works, and the project was re-awarded to Arab Contractors. Work, he promised, would begin at the project site by October this year.
He also engaged the contractor handling the Ninth Mile -Makurdi road, signaling that his oversight would not end with a single ribbon-cutting. In a district where bad roads mean spoiled harvests, delayed medical emergencies, and isolation during the rainy season, such interventions are not mere infrastructure—they are lifelines.
Those who describe Senator Asogwa reach for literary language. He is said to embody the Shakespearean ideal of an effective leader—one who respects laws and customs, fights injustice, and gains the admiration of both nobility and commoners. In every quarter, he is called a charismatic leader who embodies the role Enugu North needs for its greatness.
Such comparisons are generous, and they place a heavy burden on the man they describe. But they also reflect something real: a hunger among the people of Enugu North for leadership that is both principled and effective, both dignified and accessible. Asogwa has positioned himself as that leader.
The promise of a #2 billion empowerment program is a bold one. If implemented, it would be unprecedented in the annals of Nigerian constituency politics.
The senator himself seems aware of the stakes. “I want to set world records,” he said. Records, by definition, are public. They invite scrutiny. They demand verification.
