Former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of Labour Party in 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, will be speaking as the Guest Speaker at the investiture of 12th National Chairperson of the Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria(SWAN), Mrs. Blessing Ngozi Osakwe-Ogo(JP).
Expected to attract over 1000 women chartered accountants, the event will feature the swearing-in of the new executive committee, award of scholarships and launching of the 2025 edition of SWAN Newsletter.
Scheduled for September 10,2025 at the Muson Center, Onikan, Lagos, the investiture will be chaired by the 61st President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria(ICAN), Dr. Haruna Nma Yahaya.
Other dignitaries expected at the occasion, include the first lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, top government functionaries and maritime industry stakeholders.
Speaking with MMS Plus, the Chairperson-elect, Mrs. Blessing Osakwe-Ogo, said SWAN was founded in 1978 as a rallying point for women accountants under the parent body ICAN.
Over the years, SWAN has nurtured and mentored over ten thousand women accountants in addition to impacting the lives of the girl-child through catching them young and provision of scholarships and fostering reading culture.
Osakwe-Ogo, who is also a deputy director with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council(NSC), said SWAN annually selects four brilliant undergraduate Accountancy students and pay their fees till graduation, saying this ensures that those chosen are studying Accountancy in the university.
” The Society has achieved a lot since founded almost 50 years ago by Chief Mrs. Elizabeth Adegite. We encourage women, the girl-child, to come into Accountancy profession. We reach out to them through scholarships. We take four of them every year. This year we are taking four, and we will continue paying their fees until they graduate. We take them from second year when we are sure they are already studying Accountancy. We will continue to pay their fees as long as they maintain their grades.” She said.
According her, the society has done so much for the girl-child in neglect of the boy-child, who is left to the vagaries of their environment to become drug addict, murderer, wife-beater in future to live in the same space with the guided girl-child.
Arguing that it lacks a balance of reason, a force for inclusion and sustainable coexistence, therefore, her pet project on assumption of office would be a focus on the boy-child, who must be guided to become a good husband and professional so as to be useful to his family and the society.
