Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has drummed up support for the electronic truck call-up (ETO) system at the ports, even as it promised to fish out fraudulent persons who seek to circumvent the system.

The President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju made this call while speaking with MMS Plus in Lagos, yesterday.

According to the recently reelected MWUN President General, Eto is a commendable platform which could solve the port access crisis but it’s being held back by human elements who are unwilling to completely let go of the interface and monetary gains under the former era.

Speaking on the upcoming MWUN branch elections, he assured stakeholders in the industry that the elections would be peaceful just like the recently concluded 5th Quadrennial Delegates Conference.

Although he noted that the elections will come up in a couple of weeks, the exact date hasn’t been decided; but the leadership of MWUN had initiated talks for the aspirants to remain united and peaceful irrespective of the outcome of the polls.

Adeyanju also assured that the Nigerian Ports Authority, Shipping and Forwarding Branches have no issues with contestants but added that there might be some level of concerns in Dockworkers and Seaman and NIWA branches.

His words: “I don’t see any elections that can be tougher than my first tenure election, so, there is no cause for alarm this time around. The four arms know my steps and they know my stand on the branch elections. If we can successfully conduct the national election without rancour then I can assure stakeholders that they will be no issues in the branch elections.”

“Dockworkers and Seafarers’ branches are from one family and I know how to manage the situation. NPA and Shipping branches have no problem at all but for Seamen branch I am still meeting with them on the best way out.”

The President General of MWUN and other national executives were recently re-elected for a second term, and he pledged to take the union to new heights.
