The Centre for Marine Surveyors in Nigeria has begun a strategic initiative aimed at raising operational standards and reinforcing regulatory frameworks within the nation’s marine and cargo survey sub-sector.

The group announced this in a statement on Tuesday signed by its President of the Centre, Engr Akin Olaniyan.

Olaniyan said that the Centre was also set up to address the critical gap in Nigeria’s maritime industry to ensure that surveying services are carried out by competent and licensed professionals who meet both national and international standards.

He explained that the primary goal of the centre is to promote professionalism and technical excellence in marine surveying through education, training, and industry collaboration.

Olaniyan added that in partnership with the Niger Delta University, the centre offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Surveying, “designed to equip professionals with the practical and academic foundation required for success in the industry.”

According to him, beyond training, “We are also actively engaged in advocacy, partnerships and membership development. We have worked with key institutions like the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board to build indigenous capacity in marine surveying.

“As we continue to grow, our focus remains on strengthening industry standards, expanding students’ enrolment, and building partnerships that will give our graduates access to practical experience and job opportunities.”

Olaniyan stressed that their centre’s postgraduate diploma in marine surveying is a comprehensive programme designed to equip maritime professionals with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Speaking of the challenges, Olaniyan said, “Some of the key challenges we face include limited public awareness and the need to enhance industry partnerships. Nevertheless, through our ongoing reforms and strategic initiatives, we are confident that these issues will be effectively resolved.”

The Centre for Marine Surveyors in Nigeria is a professional organisation established to sanitise the marine surveyors’ profession and provide a platform for self-regulation.
