Clearing Agent Gets 2 Years Jail For N320,000 Fraud
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced a 32-year-old clearing agent, Olabamiji Samson, to two years imprisonment over a N320,000 fraud.
The Magistrate, Mrs. Adenike Shonubi, sentenced the accused without an option of fine.
“It will serve as deterrent to others,” Shonubi said.
The convict lives at 6, Christopher Olubunmi St., Abule Egba, a suburb of Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the convict was arraigned on June 6, 2014 on a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.
He had pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N400,000 with two sureties in like sum.
NAN also reports that the convict met the bail conditions and came from home during the trial.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Rachael Williams, had told the court that the offences were committed on May 5, 2014 at 5, Olaniyi St., new Oko-Oba, Agege, a suburb of Lagos.
Williams said that the accused collected the sum of N320,000 from one Mr. Babasola Afolabi, under the pretence of helping him to clear his vehicle at the Apapa Port, Lagos.
“After he collected the money, he absconded and all efforts by the complainant to see him proved abortive until when he was sighted and was apprehended,” she said.
She said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
