At the 2019 celebration of the Day of the Seafarer, which held in Lagos, last week, it took the intervention of the leadership of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) to stop several aggrieved Nigerian seafarers from airing their dissatisfaction on the lack of opportunities for the professionals. Some of the protestants were quickly ushered outside the premises to prevent an embarrassment that would have been costly for the host, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) as the First Lady, Aisha Buhari was the Special Guest at the occasion.
2019 Day of Seafarer has passed but the numerous challenges facing indigenous seafarers in the nation persist. NIMASA should channel more efforts towards addressing these problems, because it may not be so lucky next time.
