The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Barr Hassan Bello has tipped the Advanced Cargo Tracking Note (CTN) to address the issue of illegal arms importation as well as other forms of smuggling into the country which endangers the nation and causes the country to lose revenue.
The Shippers’ Council boss stressed that CTN was the best platform in checking revenue leakages in imports as well as obtaining information about the content of the cargoes.
Bello who was speaking during the recent Stakeholders Appreciation Night organized by the Shippers’ Council recently, described the Advanced Cargo Information System as a trade facilitation mechanism which is being introduced by the Council to achieve efficiency in the port system.
“It is a method through which we transmit the manifest even before the loading and shipment. It is transmitted to the customs for vessel, cargo reception and cargo clearance”, he said.
He also explained that CTN would enable the Customs to levy the correct duty, adding that the problem of firearms imports will not be there when CTN is fully implemented.
He disclosed that there were some administrative issues which are being resolved for the CTN to be in effect, even as he expressed optimism that the issues the Council has with some service providers will soon be resolved.
He said “we are building mechanism for settlement of dispute with the terminal operators and shipping companies and very soon you will see the result and so also with other stakeholders”.
Bello also disclosed that the Council has been able to resolve many complaints brought to it by shippers.
“We are handling so many complaints from shippers. We are using our regulatory powers in a persuasive way to achieve much higher result”, he added.
