Workers' Day: WISTA Nigeria Commends Workers In Maritime Industry

As the world marked Labour day yesterday, Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria congratulated workers in the maritime sector, identifying with the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Trade Union Congress (TUC) under the umbrella of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to mark the Labor Day.

Speaking at the WISTA National Secretariat in Apapa Lagos, the President of the Association Mrs. Eunice Ezeoke added that WISTA Nigeria felicitates with agencies including; Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN) and National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) on the Labour Day celebrations.

Mrs Ezeoke also commended the agencies on their continued efforts with the improvement of the workers welfare as well as building capacity for optimal performance.

“Nigerian Workers should be celebrated everyday. They are out there contributing to the national economy come rain or sunshine,” she said

Meanwhile, WISTA Nigeria urged the federal government to expedite action in their efforts on faster cargo evacuation through the rail and barges in a bid to alleviate the burden on the roads as well as decongest traffic on the port access roads.

She further commended the management of NPA especially for the introduction of the Electronic Truck Call Up System (ETO) which is the digital platform to regulate truck movement along the port corridor.While assuring that Eto will yield positive results despite expected initial hiccups, she advised that dedication to duty and honesty should be the trademark of every Nigerian worker as the world celebrates workers.
