WIMAFRICA Receives IMO Invitation To Global Maritime Conference
By Kenneth Jukpor
In what can be described as the biggest milestone for African Women in Maritime (WIMAFRICA), the association has been invited by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to its apex conference in Malmo, Sweden at the World Maritime University (WMU) from April 4th-6th, 2019.
WIMAFRICA’s dynamic President, Barr. (Mrs.) Jean-Chiazor Anishere has also been recognized and sponsored by the global maritime body to speak on the role of women in the Blue Economy, amongst other topical issues to mark IMO’s 2019 theme: “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community”
Speaking with MMS Plus on this development, Anishere expressed delight as she noted that this was a valuable opportunity to market Africa on the global terrain.
Commenting on the 2019 IMO theme dedicated to empower women in maritime communities, she noted that WIMAFRICA had been in the business of empowering women in maritime communities as the group bought a gigantic fish oven capable of grilling over 100 fishes for women in the Makoko fishing community in Lagos, recently.
According to her, WIMAFRICA has only begun its baby strides as the association has focused on enhancing the maritime potentials available in the region to the extent that various economies would be better for it.
“We would continue to display unrivalled dynamism and excellence to project the interest of Africa”, she said.
Recall that in November 2018, at WIMAFRICA’s first official public outing under Anishere’s leadership, WIMAFRICA won the African Union award for the best organization in support of the sustainability of the Africa’s Blue Economy.
WIMAFRICA is a fast growing Continental Body, affiliated to the African Union and the Association of African Maritime Administration (AAMA), but with a commendable and enviable Team Spirit which is the meaning of their inspiring slogan: UBUNTU!
