To Harness Blue Economy, Industry Needs Think-tank – Navy Hydrographer

Hydrographer of the Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Ayo Olugbode, has called on maritime experts and policymakers to set up a think-tank forum that would help in harnessing the potential of the nation’s Blue Economy.

Olugbode disclosed this at the maiden dinner organised by Nigeria Alumni of World Marítime University (WMU), in Lagos.

According to him, experts in the maritime sector have huge roles to play in policy direction for the government in exploring the untapped resources in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

The naval officer also disclosed that initiative should be drawn to give the Blue Economy ministry a path that will chart a direction for a thriving economic and national developmental policy.

He said, “Policy makers should draw in comparison with other countries, international and regional examples also, Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea should be the maritime hubs that are open for service and business because of the enormous potentials which can lead to a higher inflow of economic growth through generated revenue and development of the nation.”

 

On policy matters, Olugbode urged experts to ensure that they have drawn up what other countries have done, and leverage on experience and expertise garnered to propel a thriving and robust economy in the maritime space.

Speaking earlier, the President, WMU Alumni, Nigeria Chapter, Lawrence Chukwu, said, the association will continue to reflect on the challenges in the maritime industry.

He, however, disclosed that the group will share experiences that would help in solving the challenges therein.

Chukwu further disclosed that the association will be promoting government policies, maritime awareness and contribute to fostering collaboration for a sustainable blue economy.
