Shipping Lines Increase Local Charges by 100%
Multinational Shipping Companies operating in Nigeria have increased their various operational local Shipping Line Agency Charges (SLAC) by 100 percent, citing realities of operating environment as reason for the hike.
MMS Plus findings, last week, revealed that the shipping giant, CMA CGM Nigeria Shipping Limited has introduced new demurrage and detention tariff with effect from Monday August 15, 2016.
Also increased are the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and Maritime Organisation of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) levy as well as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) levy.
The notice of increment showed that the MOWCA and NPA levy for import took effect since June 27, 2016, with 20 feet container formerly charged N700 now N1, 400; while the NIMASA Environmental levy merely shows the increment as N3, 600 for 20 feet container and N7, 200 for 40 feet equivalent.
According to the notice of increment issued by the Shipping firm, “given the realities of the Nigerian economy, we are constrained to increase slightly the charges on our “MOWCA and “Environment Levy”, with effect from June 27, 2016.
On the new demurrage and detention tariff, the Shipping giant stated “given the realities of our operating environment and in the bid to serve you better, we are constrained to review upwardly our demurrage and detention charges with effect from August 15th, 2016.”
