The Federal Government on Monday said it would integrate the Sustainable Development Goals with the recently unveiled Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

The move will enable the government ensure that its plans are implemented in a manner that will support the SDGs.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, said these in Abuja at the opening session of a workshop organised by the National Bureau of Statistics to validate the baseline indicators for monitoring the implementation of the SDGs.

The baseline indicators will serve as a benchmark against which the implementation of the SDGs will be measured.

Orelope-Adefulire said that her office was in the process of developing an agreement with other agencies of government to ensure adherence to the implementation of the SDGs.

“We will partner all stakeholders on the implementation of the SDGs and we will collaborate also with the Ministry of Budget and National Planning to integrate the SDGs into the ERGP of the government,” she said.

The Statistician General for the Federation and Chief Executive, NBS, Dr. Yemi Kale, stated that the agency was developing the baseline indicators to assist the government in the monitoring of the SDGs.

This, he stated, was a clear departure from the country’s experience under the Millennium Development Goals where monitoring of the goals and production of indicators did not commence until midway into its implementation.
