Airports recorded 8.5 million travellers in six months – NBS
The National Bureau of Statistics has said that a total of 8.48 million passengers travelled through Nigerian airports in the first half of 2019.
The bureau said this in its air transportation report released on Tuesday night.
A breakdown of the 8.48 million passengers showed that about four million passengers travelled through the airports in the first quarter of last year while the second quarter recorded 4.48 million travellers.
The report read, “The first two quarters of 2019 saw diverse performance in the various items that make up airport transportation in Nigeria.
“The total number of passengers who passed through Nigerian airports reached 4,002,528 in the first quarter of 2019, a 3.87 per cent year-on-year growth from the same quarter of 2018; and 4,485,170 in the second quarter of 2019.
“Consequently, there was 12.06 per cent growth in passengers for Q2 2019 when compared to Q1 2019 figures.”
The report stated that in the first half of 2019, about 138,464 aircraft travelled through the airports, adding that this represented 100.61 per cent growth from total aircraft recorded in the same period last year.
It said there was a decline of 0.65 per cent in cargo movement in the first half of the year.
For mail traffic, the report stated there was a 26.39 per cent increase in the first half of 2019 when compared to the same period of 2018.
