FG Connects Lagos Riverine Communities To Power Grid

FG Connects Lagos Riverine Communities To Power GridSome riverine communities in Lagos have been connected to the national power grid by the Federal Government with the inauguration of 1x30MVA/132/33kV Transmission Substation at Ilashe Island, Oriade Local Government Area, Lagos.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, said on Thursday that President Muhammadu Buhari had sent a clear message by connecting Ilashe to the grid that no rural community would be left behind.

He said, “Ilashe is a very historic and interesting island and a gift to Lagos; it is part of a peninsula really that stretches for almost 120 kilometres all the way from Badagry to Epe, lying between the Atlantic and a lagoon. Very few countries in the world have this kind of treasure of nature.

“Ilashe, Ilado, Oriade, and so many other communities have existed here for over 100 years. People have found them out; they have been the host and remain host to resorts, leisure houses, beaches and you see a lot of water sports activities but one thing has been missing: electricity.”

The minister described the connection of the communities to the grid as an engineering feat, saying, “The staff members of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, under the leadership of Usman Muhammed, have achieved this.”

According to the TCN, the project will deliver about 24 megawatts power to five communities, namely Ilashe, Ibese, Ikare, Igbologun and Ilado Odo.
