SON stresses importance of African trade facilitation

The Director-General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Aboloma, has declared that the agency will spare no effort to boost intra and inter-African trade.

He spoke at the 56th Council Meeting of the African Organisation for Standardisation in Ouagadougou, the Burkina Faso capital, the agency said in a statement on Thursday.

The SON boss stated that promoting trade within and outside Africa remained critical towards the overall economic development of the continent.

According to him, Nigeria through SON will continue to play vital role in Africa’s economic integration and trade facilitation by applying effective standards and quality assurance initiatives.

He pledged the commitment of the agency towards driving the birth of Africa’s Continental Free Trade Area, a programme handed down to the chief executive officers of Africa’s national standards bodies by the African Union.

The President, ARSO, Eve Gadzikwa, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe Bureau of Standards, said the theme of the 2017 General Assembly was, ‘Celebrating 2017 as the year of quality infrastructure in Africa: The role of standardisation for better quality’

She said the theme was apt to Africa’s quest for industrialisation and economic growth.

She noted that ARSO’s five-year strategic plan 2017-2022 was aimed at building new strategies to address the challenges of poor infrastructure in Africa.
