Despite the myriads of controversies surrounding its 2016 national elections, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria elections is scheduled to take place this week on October 25th – 26th.
The international body had mandated the Nigerian CILT chapter to cancel its national council elections which were initially scheduled to have held on August 25th and 26th during the 2016 Annual General Meeting (AGM) and National Conference.
However, the CILT Nigeria has moved swiftly to prevent the hammer of the international council by setting a new date for the elections and agreeing to reschedule the elections in a different location as most members did not support the idea of holding the polls in Port Harcourt.
The CILT Executives had previously arranged for the polls to take place in Port Harcourt, Rivers state but their decision prompted uproar especially in Lagos where members protested at the CILT national headquarters in Ikoyi.
The hullabaloo surrounding the election has also polarized members into warring groups as the tussle between the two main Presidential candidates, Mr. Ibrahim Jubril and Prof. Kayode Oyesiku increases.
Mr. Ibrahim Jubril is believed to have the support of majority of the Lagos CILT members, who expressed their distaste by protesting when they realized the elections would not hold in Lagos as it could cost their prime candidate some votes.
On the other hand, Prof. Kayode Oyesiku is believed to have gotten the endorsement of the incumbent National President, Major- Gen. Umar Usman. Prof. Kayode Oyesiku is the incumbent Deputy National President of the Institute.
