The Pains of Consumers
Price of products and services are being jerked up by producers and service providers at will and without recourse to the feelings of the end-product users.
This is so alarming that people go to the market without being able to establish the actual price of a product because of the variation in prices and hike at will
Lately, Multichoice introduced an astronomical increase in subscription rate of DSTV boquets by 20% from 1st April without any attendant reason for doing so.
It would have been understood if the like in subscription fee came at the time the dollars was hitting the roof top. Why is it coming when dollar rate to naira is drastically coming down?
The Director General of Consumer Protection Council (CPC), Mrs. Dupe Atoki has said the reason is that the government is yet to approve the legislation that would transform the council into a more efficient and effective consumer protection agency. Consumer exploitation due to absence of anti-competition law in the country is another thing that is responsible for the malaise.
If the government is not willing to empower the council to salvage the masses, what then is the need of establishing it in the first place?
Consumers are tired of government agencies created without bite for efficiency.
Same goes to the electricity providers who will charge you even when you don’t have light in your house for an upward of a month with threat of disconnecting you.
This inhuman treatment to consumers should be brought to an end because it is man’s inhumanity to man.
