Skills deficit affects quality of audits – AGF
Auditor-General of the Federation, Anthony Ayene

The major handicap to the delivery of high quality audits in government is the dearth of skills, the Auditor-General for the Federation, Anthony Ayine, has said.

According to him, auditors must be versatile in the field of accounting than accountants in order to perform efficiently and effectively.

Ayine was quoted in a statement issued by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation in Abuja on Tuesday as saying, “Auditors must always be a step ahead of accountants, because you cannot audit what you don’t know.”

He stated this during the inauguration of the OAGF Regularity Audit Guide, Code of Conduct and Ethics, Quality Control and Assurance Manual and the OAGF e-Learning Portal.

Ayine charged employees of the OAGF to discharge their duties with diligence and commitment in order to make their work impactful and to add value.

He said the inauguration was in continuation of the implementation of the road map towards repositioning the OAGF to fulfil its constitutional mandate.

The auditor-general expressed optimism that the inauguration was one major step towards improving the skill base of workers in the office.

He warned the workers that auditors who did not take the opportunity to improve their skills and rededicate to honest work would find themselves obsolete within a short period.

Ayine stated, “Auditors with right skills should do a thorough job in line with international best practices. Auditors must have integrity and objectivity to conclude their job and report all their findings in full.
