Shippers lament abandonment of Edo, Delta ports
Shippers, under the auspices of Delta Shippers Association, are wondering why the ports in Edo and Delta states are abandoned by the Federal Government.
The president of DELSA, Austin Egbegbadia, said this recently during a one-day sensitisation workshop on ports’ economic regulation organised by the Nigerian Shippers Council in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The workshop was themed, “Promoting Competitiveness in the Maritime Industry: The Mandate of The Nigerian Shippers Council.”
Egbegbadia, in a statement, said that ports in these two states were left out despite the standard port facilities in these two areas.
“I don’t know why the ports in Edo & Delta States are being left out of the shipping activities in the old Mid-West region despite the very standard port facilities in these areas and their strategic locations as the shortest routes to other parts of the country.”
He urged the Federal Government, members of the National Assembly, the Nigerian Ports Authority, NSC, and other maritime industry chieftains to revisit the issue of dredging of the Escravos channel.
The DELSA president lamented the seeming absence of key government representatives from Edo and Delta at the event.
