One of Nigeria’s foremost maritime amazons, Barr. (Mrs.) Margaret Orakwusi has been honoured as the Minister of State for Transportation, Senator Gbemisola Saraki commissioned an academic block named ‘Margaret Orakwusi’ at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron, yesterday.
Orakwusi, who is also the Chairperson of Nigerian Ship-owners Forum and a former Chairman of Nigeria Fishing Trawler Owners Association (NIFTOA), has contributed significantly in the development of the nation’s maritime sector for decades.
Speaking with MMS Plus on the development, Orakwusi expressed delight even as she said the recognition challenges her to contribute more in capacity building and infrastructure development in the maritime sector.
Her words: “I acknowledge with pride the tremendous transformation of Maritime Academy Oron under the leadership of a great and committed Performer the Rector, Comrade Duja Effedua and his team. The Rector’s zeal and determination to provide the cadets a conducive environment for habitation and quality education must be encouraged and celebrated by Maritime Stakeholders.”
Noting that MAN Oron is creating opportunities for indigenous operators to source locally trained seafarers, she posited that to be associated with a world class institution is a glorious honour to her.
“This recognition challenges me to contribute more in capacity and infrastructural development in the maritime industry,” she added.
Orakwusi is also a board member of Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) and the Chief Executive Officer of Morbod Group.
