Nigeria loses N10bn monthly to lack of activity at Tin Can Port II
The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), says the Federal Government loses more than N10 billion monthly because of inactivity at Tin Can Port Area two, Lily Pond, Ijora, Lagos.
Mr Olufemi Olabanji, Chairman of the Association, Tin Can two Area Command, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday that the terminal had the capacity to handle 25,000 containers.
“ The Tin Can Area two command at Lily pond has the capacity to take 15,000 containers and an export bay that can take 10,000 containers.
“ Lily pond has facility for export and it is underutilised and we appeal to the Federal Government to do something urgent to reverse this trend,” he said.
According to Olabanji, efforts should be made divert ships (containers) from some ports to the terminal for easy access and clearance of goods.
“ We are aware that it takes some days to clear goods in some Lagos Ports. We want a situation where some of the containers should be sent to the Lily pond terminal.
“ This process will make the area to be active, generate revenue from imports and exports.
“At the moment, the terminal is not being put to use. The facilities there are wasted because of inactivity,” he said.
Olabanji urged the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Shippers` Council to ensure that ships are stemmed to Lily pond terminal.
