Curbing The Incessant Fulani Herdsmen Massacre In Nigeria

Curbing The Incessant Fulani Herdsmen Massacre In NigeriaThe consistencies in the clash between Fulani Herdsmen, farmers and other Nigerians have become dominant issue of public discuss in recent times.

This is not just due to the mass murder of innocent citizens recorded on daily basis but the continuous indifference of the federal government on such sensitive issue bordering on security of lives and properties.

Several notable citizens have advanced rational arguments in describing the situation especially the role of President Muhammadu Buhari who also belongs to the Fulani tribe in the ugly incident that could be best described as genocide and savage manslaughter.

Could it be that the Herdsmen activities have the backing of the Presidency? Why has their activities been left unchecked? What is the rationale behind the President’s silence despite increasing massacre of Nigerians on daily basis by this group? Is it because all the entire security architecture of the country is in the hands of the Fulani? Is this the reason why the marauding Fulani herdsmen have not been stopped or declared as a terrorist group by our government? All these and more questions are begging for answers.

Most sardonic, these herdsmen have through their illicit activities rendered thousands homeless, orphans, and many dead as they continued to torment people of other tribes and ethnic affiliations in other parts of the country. Especially those of ethnic minorities of the North and other parts of the West. Hence, the need to probe more into the real mission of this “terrorist group”.

Most worrisome and alarming is the Benue Genocide that took a deadly dimension at the wake of 2018 leading to countless deaths without any proactive or expedient measures to arrest the situation by all concerned security institutions.

Aside the President’s new year address that has raised more skepticism and loss of confidence among citizens, the Inspector General of police further aggravated the issue by not hiding his bias when he described the Benue genocide as mere communal clash among citizens only to come out with apologies few days later after his statement had been flawed with criticisms.

IPOB was declared as a terrorist group by the Buhari led government without causing a fraction of the carnage killer herdsmen are known to have caused. Why is this government treating the terrorist herdsmen with kid-gloves? Why is Miyetti Allah still issuing threats and giving conditions before the killings will stop instead of being on the run as a proscribed group?

In its press statement on Tuesday January 9, 2018, the Oodua Nationalist Coalition, (ONAC), warned that “No inch of Yoruba territory must be ceded for ‘Cattle Colony’ by the State or Federal Governments” even as it accused President Mohammadu Buhari of promoting ethnic supremacy. The Pan Yoruba group warned that any attempt to cede any Yoruba territory in the traditional Yoruba homes of Ogun, Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Akoko Edo, Itsekiri, Kwara and Kogi States is an invitation to anarchy, mayhem and bloodletting.

The group asserted that the violence of the herdsmen have political undertones and it’s is orchestrated to cow and intimidate Nigerians into cowardly submission. ONAC said the Fulani herdsmen and the associated menace is not just a problem of trade, but also “a phenomenon of Islamic extremism, cultural imperialism and expansionist plot” clothed in the images of commerce. Hence its (ONAC) objection to the proposed grazing routes or Cattle colonies in the above highlighted territories.

Of course, it is incontrovertible that the South-South and South Eastern Nigerians would take similar position on the matter which is a pointer to an imminent national danger.

What president Buhari still jokes with at this juncture is the unity of the nation. It is becoming obvious that the Fulani Herdsmen enjoys the blessings of their Kinsmen ranging from the President, IG of Police, Army Chief, National Security Adviser, Chief of Air staff, Interior Minister, Department of State Security et al in their unlawful display.

President Buhari has to understand that Nigerians cannot forget in a hurry his numerous campaign promises on maximum security of lives and property of all Nigerians.

He should also be cognizant that this was how Boko Haram was unconsciously nurtured till it degenerated into international disaster and the economic effects cannot be overemphasized.

It is time for all patriotic Nigerians to speak out against the ethnic cleansing in Nigeria and the conspiracy of silence of our government.

President Buhari should courageously detribalize himself and do the needful by ordering the arrest and prosecution of the guilty.

All security agencies should remain independent, shun tribalism and ethnic loyalty if Nigeria must continue to peacefully coexist.

President Buhari must come to terms on the indisputable fact that the protection of lives and property of the citizens is more important than war against corruption! The protection of lives of citizens is the most sacred responsibility of the state.

Open grazing ban is not the same as enforcement. It therefore behoves on the concerned agencies to ensure adequate compliance and enforcement of the said ban by the President.
