The success recorded in  the Gulf of Guinea(GoG) in the reduction of piracy attacks ,has been attributed to sub- regional and international  collaborations  as well as enforcement, by governments of member states and the international community.

President of the Global Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Chief Teete Owusu -Nortey, the first black African to head the exalted office since 1919, when the organisation was founded, stated this in an interview with MMS Plus,at the 2022,CILT Nigeria Conference, held in Lagos last week  Tuesday.

Owusu Nortey said  while piracy or any other crime cannot be  completely eradicated given the nature of humans, they can actually be  curtailed .

“We can’t eradicate anything in this world. All that is required is enforcement. The rules and regulations are there. So,if there is responsibility, the onus rests or lies with individual countries to govern or safe guard their boundary. To some large extent, I can see that piracy at the GoG  has reduced significantly, because of collaborations among member  nation’s ,in terms of  the United Nations ( UN),African Union( AU) and other  sub- region groups ,like ECOWAS and so on.So, enforcement  has  now become a hall mark of the story – it has become something that is being set at all levels” he said .

Chief Nortey  expressed satisfaction  that most of the countries within  the region have enforced and beefed up security enforcement on the coast, this according to him,is  what has caused the reduction in the GoG and globally.

On the issue of  payment of war risk insurance by shipping companies in Nigeria for foreign vessels coming into Nigeria, the new president of CILT Global, declined to comment on the issue because according to him, “This is the first time I’m hearing this kind of thing. It is very difficult to comment on it .However, from the information you provided me , I’ll go and do a research on that.I wouldn’t want to make  comment on such thing now” he said.
