The death has been announced of elder statesman, politician, businessman and administrator, Alhaji Dr. Bamanga Mahmud Tukur, CON, Tafidan Adamawa, today, Saturday, September 12, 2026, in Abuja.
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was a towering figure whose influence on Nigeria’s socio-political and economic landscape spanned more than six decades.
He was widely recognised for his distinguished service as the former Governor of the old Gongola State, former Minister of Industries, former National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and former Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
*Early Life and Education*
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was born on September 15, 1935, in present-day Adamawa State, Nigeria.
He obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree from the University of Pittsburgh in the United States. He was also awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree in Law (Honoris Causa) by the Benue State University, Makurdi.
A highly respected traditional title holder, he held the distinguished titles of Tafidan Adamawa and Wakilin Ganye, reflecting his deep cultural roots and standing in Adamawa State and Northern Nigeria.
*Distinguished Career in Public Service*
Bamanga Tukur’s career in public service was marked by several notable appointments and achievements.
At the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), he served as General Manager and Chief Executive between 1975 and 1982, where he played a significant role in efforts to address port congestion and advance the modernisation of Nigeria’s seaports.
He later served as Governor of the old Gongola State during the Second Republic, before the military coup of December 1983.
He also served as Minister of Industries under the military administration of General Sani Abacha.

Beyond public service, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was a successful businessman and continental economic leader. As the founder of BHI Holdings (Daddo Group), he expanded his business interests and influence across Africa.
His contributions to African economic development included his role as:
Founder, former President and Life Patron of the Africa Business Roundtable (ABR);
Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group, following his election to the position in March 2002; and
The first African Vice President of the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH), underscoring his remarkable stature in the global maritime community.

Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was elected National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in March 2012, serving during a critical period in the history of Nigeria’s then ruling political party.
