LCCI commends female entrepreneurs for tax compliance

The President, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Nike Akande, has commended women entrepreneurs for their resilience and doggedness.

Akande, who was represented by the Chairperson of the LCCI Women Group, Agnes Shobajo, gave this commendation during the chamber’s women group’s third annual conference themed, “Women as change agents: Towards tax compliant society.”

She said, “The Nigerian woman has come a long way through peculiar challenges in the business and family fronts. Interestingly too, Nigerian women have remained resilient and dogged their quest for survival even when placed side by side by their male counterparts in professions usually designated as ‘men-only’.

“Today, we celebrate the increasing recognition given to women due to their unique role in poverty reduction and entrepreneurship across the globe. Many international development finance organisations like the World Bank, International Labour Organisation, United Nations Women, and even the Central Bank of Nigeria have made impressive efforts at empowering women entrepreneurs in the quest for inclusive and sustainable development.”

According to her, after their 2017 annual meeting, the development committee of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund had issued a communiqué calling for closure of gender gaps for women’s access to property, finance and decent work which were critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

She added, “The committee also commended the World Bank for the creation of the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative, which is expected to leverage more than $1bn to help unlock the potential of women entrepreneurs.

“We urge the Nigerian government at all levels to explore available initiatives and deploy needed resources towards the cause of women and children in Nigeria.”

The conference focused on the need for business owners to imbibe the culture of tax compliance and create role models among male children.
