NPA’s Epitome Of Professionalism

NPA’s Epitome Of Professionalism
Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority, Hadiza Bala Usman

“The quality of person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor”– Vince Lombardi

The apt sayings by Lombardi show the importance of commitment and hard work to ensuring success in one’s career irrespective of the profession. However most people have ignored this virtue in their daily activities and this eventually lead to their downfall as they aren’t able to reach the peak of their profession as a result of shady dealings and other unlawful practices.

In Nigeria, the situation of the country has not encouraged people to embrace good qualities as bribery; violence and corruption have become the norm in most business outfits and the problem a mainstay at government parastatals.

Despite this appalling situation in the society, the importance of commitment and hard work in any profession or career cannot be over emphasized and anyone who has achieved success through a legitimate means deserves to be applauded.

There is a rare personality who is defying the odds at the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA). He is Mr. Jerry Bello, a security officer with a difference who has displayed amiable qualities in his profession in spite of the popular trend of indiscipline displayed by his colleagues.

As a security officer, Jerry believes that hard work pays and this had made him not to join the club of bribe collectors at the Authority. Contrary to the practice of pestering visitors for money; Jerry would rather wear a smile as he goes about his duties efficiently.

At such a time when the Civil Service is characterized by unruliness and disruptive behavior, Jerry is indeed a security officer with a difference and one that deserves commendation from the management of the Authority.

He should be a role model to other officers at the Authority! Such refined service shouldn’t go unnoticed, he deserves to be commended. He has shown commitment to his job and has also avoided all manner of immoral practices.

MMS Plus therefore advises staff in the industry to borrow a leaf from Mr. Jerry and put in more effort to ensure that they emulate good qualities that would help improve the industry and the country at large.
