As part of efforts to facilitate global engagement with the Nigerian maritime industryx, leading Nigerian shipping and transport law firm, Akabogu & Associates, is set to host the West African Shipping Summit, scheduled as one of the highlight events of the London International Shipping Week.
This is as the global shipping community converges in London to discuss among other matters, issues bordering on security and investments in Nigerian shipping.
The Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, will together with Dr. Dakuku Peterside, Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Hadiza Bala Usman, Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) lead a high-powered representation of the Nigerian government to discuss issues in Nigerian shipping markets including security, investments and dispute resolution. The private sector will also be represented by the President of the Nigerian Ship Owners Association Aminu Umar, and Andy Isichei, President, Nigerian Chamber of Shipping (NCS).
The event, which will hold on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at the Arundel House, London, will focus on shipping and maritime activities in West Africa, with insights into issues and trends on regulatory compliance, security, new markets, dispute resolution and investment in Nigeria and across the region. Three key sessions will address the most important issues that affect the business of shipping and maritime trade in the region from legal and regulatory viewpoints.
They include; “Doing Maritime Business in Nigeria” – to give guidance for business and investment in the Nigerian maritime sector from both regulatory and operational viewpoints; “Security of the Nigerian Maritime Domain and the Gulf of Guinea” – to explore security reports, trends, incidents, regulations and related realities which impact shipping in Nigerian waters; and “Resolving Shipping Disputes in Nigeria” – to highlight typical claim situations, jurisdiction, judicial disposition and alternative dispute resolution in Nigerian shipping. It is also to provide practical insight for avoiding or dealing with certain types of disputes.
Giving insight into the summit, Senior Partner of Akabogu and Associates, Mr. Emeka Akabogu stated that the idea was to highlight and clarify those issues which stakeholders with interest in the Nigerian shipping and maritime sectors are concerned about, noting that the Nigerian market remains most attractive on the continent.
