The Chairman, United Bank for Africa Plc, Mr. Tony Elumelu, has described entrepreneurship as the most secure route to sustainable development, calling on African leaders to create youth business champions.

He also called for a shared approach to African development, stressing that it was “the only route to achieving sustainable economic development, political stability and economic prosperity on the African continent.”

Elumelu stated this at the Tunisian government’s International Investment Conference, with 15 delegations representing the United Nations and several countries, including Germany, Canada, France, Qatar and Algeria in attendance, according to a statement from the bank.

Stressing the need to encourage youth engagement, he said, “It is imperative for African leaders to implement growth policies that will see the youth as catalysts to development, thus avoiding the socio-economic crisis as experienced in Tunisia and other countries in Africa in past years.”

The UBA chairman promised to support Tunisia’s economic transformation by investing in young aspiring entrepreneurs through his Tony Elumelu Foundation, which champions entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs across the African continent as the catalyst for sustainable growth.

He pledged to help catapult Tunisian entrepreneurs into the next generation of top African business leaders through the $100m Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme.
