Cameroonians celebrate AFCON opener victory with street parties

Cameroonians tropped out to the streets after the indomitable lions defeated Burkina Faso, 2-1 in the opening African Cup on Nations Match on Sunday.

The match which was played at the Olembe Stadium in Younde, sparked the sleepy port in northern Cameroon, Garou into jubilations, as residents trooped to the major the streets in their national colours, blaring horns and singing songs in the traditional dielect, NAN reports.

Cameroon relied on penalties to pull up a comeback win against Burkina Faso in the opening match of the 2021 AFCON in Yaounde.

Ousman Aboubakar a resident of Garoua told NAN that he was so excited about the win, especially because Cameroon came from a goal down to snatch the win.

“I am happy that we win the match, I am praying that our team lift the Cup (AFCON) because we are the host,” he said.

Mohamadou Alhadji on his part said the Indomitable Lions need to play better in the next match to go far in the competition.

“We thank God for the win today but I want the team to improve in their play so as to go far in the AFCON,” he said.

Benoit Ngono said the win had thrown the city into a frenzy with most residents trooping out to celebrate the win.

It was earlier reported that the Stallions of Burkina Faso suffered setbacks as their coach, Kamou Malo, and six other players tested positive to COVID-19. The Burkina Faso team also filed a complaint to the Confederation of African Football, claiming double standards maltreatment before the game.
