It is common to see flyers and stickers with the inscription, “Nigerian Police is your friend”, However their actions never correspond with their witty statement.
On Thursday last week the Apapa port was engulfed in gunfire from policemen as they shot sporadically into the air to disperse truck drivers, who had gathered to protest alleged incessant harassment and extortion by security officials at the port gate.
An eyewitness said, “Last night (Wednesday), a policeman used the stock of his gun to hit the head of a truck driver for no good reason and the drivers felt that the harassment was becoming too much. Today (Thursday) they came to show their anger and that’s why you see all of them gathered at the gate.”
Abeg, if these are the qualities of a good police officer, I would rather have them as foes!
