Banks’ non-performing loans now N1.17tn – NBSNon-performing loans in the Nigerian banking sector fell by N42.4bn in three months, latest figures from the National Bureau of Statistics have shown.

According to figures obtained from the NBS’ latest Selected Banking Sector Data Report on Sunday, the total amount of non-performing loans in Nigerian banks fell from N1.21tn at the end of the second quarter of 2020 to N1.17tn as of Q3 2020

The NBS said in terms of credit to the private sector, the total value of credit allocated by the bank stood at N19.87tn as of Q3 2020.

“Oil and gas and manufacturing sectors got credit allocation of N3.74tn and N3.03tn to record the highest credit allocation as at the period under review,” it said.

The data also showed that most of the beneficiaries of bank loans were from Lagos State while Yobe beneficiaries were the least from a total loan of N19.46tn as of the end of Q3 2020.

“Lagos beneficiaries recorded the highest credit by geographical distribution with N15.13tn, accounting for 77.74 per cent of the total credit by geographical distribution, while Yobe State recorded the least with N19.38bn, accounting for 0.09 per cent in Q3 2020,” the NBS stated.

According to  the figures, beneficiaries from Abia, Abuja, Adamawa and Akwa-Ibom borrowed N115.83bn, N594.02bn, N62.16bn and N92.21bn respectively, while those from Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa and Benue borrowed N98.72bn, N48.13bn, N98.81bn and N90.18bn respectively.

Beneficiaries from Borno, Cross River, Delta and Ebonyi borrowed N38.24bn, N77.25bn, N216.39 and N25.06bn respectively, while those from Edo, Ekiti, Enugu and Gombe borrowed N142.18bn, N47.56bn, N53.37bn and N63.01bn respectively.

The NBS said that Imo, Jigawa and Kaduna beneficiaries borrowed N93.63bn, N25.4bn and N86.26bn respectively.

It added that beneficiaries from Kano, Katsina, Kebbi and Kogi borrowed N187.89bn, N34.89bn, N25.42bn and N101.03bn respectively, while those from Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger and Ogun got N73.92bn, 33.66bn, 63.26bn and N118.74bn loans respectively.

Ondo, Osun, Oyo and Plateau beneficiaries borrowed N96.7bn, N66.04, N208.82bn and N75.43bn respectively, while those from Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba and Zamfara got N977.06bn, N62.53bn, N53.41bn, and N65.26bn loans respectively.
