In its relentless efforts in combating illicit and illegal goods importation and the desire to build on the existing inter-agency cooperation with all concerned regulatory Agencies, the Tincan Island command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over some seized pharmaceutical products to the Nigeria Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
According to the command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Uche Ejesieme in a press statement made available to MMS Plus, the pharmaceutical products include: cartons of Spectradol (Tramadol) Capsules of various milligrams; Spectra-Doxycycline Capsules of various milligrams as well as Jinart Tablets; Clarinthromycin Tablets of five hundred milligrams and Jincold-Extra Strength Capsules of various milligrams, concealed in a 40ft container with number MRKU 519445/3 and declared as spare parts.
Speaking on the negative effect of the drugs on the teeming Nigerian Youths, the Customs Area Comptroller (CAC), Comptroller Yusuf Bashar stated that the products are highly regulated and Nigerian Youths consume them illegally at an alarming proportion to the extent that it often leads them into committing despicable acts that will certainly have far reaching negative implications on their health in particular and the nation’s security at large.
While listing the number of seizures the Command had made recently to include arms, cars, drugs among others, the CAC lamented that an importer who wrongly declared pharmaceutical products as imported vehicles, Computer Accessories and others has no good intention for the nation and the people. He however expressed utmost confidence in the officials of the NDLEA in effectively completing investigations and bringing the Importers to book.
“It’s not just about money but the health and well-being of the people, every Nigerian should show care about the life of Nigerians and it’s not about revenue nor trade facilitation but about the good of Nigeria and Nigerians, so this must stop”. he said
Compt. Bashar however noted that the NCS would not allow unpatriotic and inconsiderate importers and Agents use Tincan Island Port as a environment for any evil and illegal operation even as he identified the Importer of the said pharmaceutical products as Jin Spectra Pharmaceutical Limited of No. 3 Festing Road, Kano while the Clearing Agency is Febeaco Nigeria Limited of 29, Apapa/Oshodi Expressway, Ibafon, Apapa- Lagos.
Receiving the consignment on behalf of the chairman of NDLEA, the commander Tincan Island Port, Mr. Nse Jack commended the CAC for his consistent commitment to the concept of Inter-Agency collaboration and synergy over time. He assured him that NDLEA would conduct further due diligence test to unravel details of the Importer for eventual prosecution even as he wished that the good works of the comptroller be emulated by other Commands for the overall benefit of the Nation.
