As part of efforts to reiterate its committment to the development of human capacity at the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), the Council’s management has assured that six members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) would be sponsored to attend the upcoming world accountants conference in Sydney.
The Council gave this assurance when the leadership of ICAN paid a courtesy visit to the Shippers’ Council headquarters in Apapa, Lagos, yesterday.
The Director Inland Services, Mr. Akin Makinde, who received the ICAN delegation on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Barr. Hassan Bello, made this committment after the professional body had beckoned on the Council to sponsor some of its members of staff to the event.
“I welcome this great institute to the Council today. Shippers’ Council is a knowledge driven organization therefore we prioritize what ICAN stands for. Institutes like ICAN have been responsible for training of the exemplary workforce we have at the Council. Your members who work at the Council have been amiable diplomats of ICAN. They epitomize excellence, diligence and accountability”, Dr. Makinde said in his opening remarks.
Meanwhile, ICAN lauded the Shippers’ Council for the level of professionalism displayed my the members of staff, even as the association commended the Council for its diligence in carrying out the arduous task of ensuring fair-play and stability for Nigeria’s import dependent economy.
ICAN President, Alhaji Ismaila Zakari who was represented by the 2nd Deputy Vice President, Mrs. Dame Onome Adewuyi, urged the Council to ensure that Nigerian ports become the hub in West and Central Africa.
Mrs. Adewuyi admonished Shippers’ Council to inform the association when ICAN members are involved in any form of corruption, noting that the body doesn’t condole corrupt practices.
“We have effective disciplinary measures at ICAN because we don’t condole corruption. Please feel free to reach out to the Institute when our members err” she said.
While commending the Council for its efforts which has led to refuction in cargo diversion to neighbouring ports, the ICAN Vice President also implore the Council to continue to employ its members as she said ICAN members boast a certain degree of professionalism.
