Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has partnered the Nigerian Heart Foundation (NHF) to create awareness for related heart diseases in Nigeria, even as the Foundation plans to raise a sum of One Hundred million Naira (N100m) to tackle the menace of heart diseases in Nigeria.
In a joint press conference held in Lagos on Thursday to announce the NHF 20th Charity Golf Tournament scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt in September 1, the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside revealed that the agency is partnering with NHF as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Peterside, who was represented at the conference by the Deputy Director, Public Relations at NIMASA, Mr. Isichei Osamgbi said that as a socially responsible agency, NIMASA was ready to partner with anyone who has the mandate of saving human lives.
He said the Golf tournament would help to create awareness on the on heart related diseases to help save lives, even as he urged other stakeholders and relevant agencies to join hands in fighting the scourge.
According to him, “The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) will be partnering with NHF as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) focus and we are delighted to be working with the Foundation in its drive towards raising awareness on heart related diseases. Heart related diseases affect all gender, all ages and cuts across all socio economic and geographic lines
“NIMASA has a mandate to achieve and sustain safe, secure shipping, cleaner oceans and enhanced maritime capacity in line with global best practices towards Nigeria’s economic development”
In his opening remarks, the Executive Director of NHF, Dr. Kingsley Akinroye stated that about 34% percent of Nigerians live with High Blood Pressure hence the need for more awareness among the Nigerian populace.
He added that heart diseases now occupied highest cause of death in the country adding that it could only be prevented and not cured.
Dr. Akinroye said the foundation in its bid to reduce and prevent cardiovascular related diseases in the Nigerian population plans to raise the sum of N100 million from this Charity Tournament.
He added that the N100 million would be used to spread information and create awareness, prevention of heart diseases, promotion of research on cardiovascular diseases, amongst other heart health promotion and advocacy action on heart issues.
He said the Nigerian Heart Foundation is a National charity inaugurated in July 1992, an affiliate of the World Heart Federation, Geneva and a founding member of African Heart Network. Its major objectives are Heart health promotion, support of medical and scientific research in Heart disease and advocacy on Heart issues.
He said the 2018 edition is the first time in over 20 years of hosting golf tournaments across the country that NHF will be using the Port Harcourt Golf Course, even as he disclosed that over 100 Professionals and amateur Golfers from all around the country are expected to participate at this event in Port Harcourt.
“Annually, the Nigerian Heart foundation organizes Charity Golf Tournaments in Abuja, Lagos, Jos, lbadan, Kano, Ada in Osun State and other Golf courses around the country to encourage participation in lifestyle activities which is beneficial to the development of Healthy Hearts as well as prevention of cardiovascular disease”

Also speaking at the Conference, the Captain of Port Harcourt Golf Course, Mr. Chris Allagoa said his organization agreed to partner NHF in the Golf Tournament because the competition would benefit the golf community generally.
He expressed the readiness of Port Harcourt Golf Course to host the tournament, saying he looks forward to the event and more activities in the state.
Mr. Chris also thanked NIMASA for supporting the initiative, and pledged to ensure successful hosting of the tournament in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
Highlight of the event was the unveiling of the posters announcing the commencement of the 20th Charity Golf Tournament as being organised by the Nigerian Heart Foundation.
