FAAN To Deploy K9 Dogs To Enhance Safety, Security At The Airports

Security of the nation’s airports and in particular, surveillance of the perimeter fence will soon be stepped up with the deployment of well trained K9 dogs.

In safety and security standard practice, K9 security detection dogs are trained to screen for explosives and narcotics in complex environments worldwide and to control the crowd. As is the case with protection dogs generally, their mere presence raises the bar in precise detection. And the dogs can discourage threatening behavior, such as criminal and terrorist acts.

Also to be added to improve facilitation and enhance security is the installation of modern scanning machines that will be provided in sufficient numbers throughout the airports.

Group Captain Usman Sadiq Abubakar, USA, Executive Director, Airport Security, made the disclosure at the sideline during the public rally to commemorate the customers week, which took place at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria.

He said the management of FAAN is fully supporting the weeklong program as a means of eliciting feedback from the consumers which will enable the leadership of FAAN to come up with a tailor-made solution to whatever the consumer might register as not measuring up to their expectations in all aspects of service delivery by the airport.

He said the careful study of past security breaches at the airports informed the creative approach to security issues that the management will adopt as a way to instill confidence in all stakeholders especially the passengers.

The Director added that the complementary aspect of the security architecture soon to be launched in full swing is the proactive involvement of the airports’ various communities- internal and external.

He explained that active involvement of the external communities will help mitigate the issue of airport land encroachment and other threats from outside while the various communities within the airport will be especially engaged in diverse manners but will in no doubt enhance the total security of the airport.
