It is always news when the salaries and allowances of workers are slashed in Nigeria especially in the public sector where members of staff protest through their unions. They organize rallies, carry placards and sing anti-humanitarian chants. Their anger can be understood at this point but you never hear praise, commendations or press briefings when the government increases their pay package. In fact, you never know because no one ever tells you his or her salary has been increased. MMS Plus recent publication on 100% increase in Shippers’ Council staff salaries was greeted with scorn and disdain as the employees lamented that their lives have been endangered for fear of kidnappers while others covertly lamented that their spouses now know their pay package has been increased.
Well, if it’s good to go public when there is a slash in salaries then it is good to do same when there is increment. If the government deserve ridicule for poor renumeration, then they also deserve commendation when they make it better.
Shippers’ Council abeg manage your salary kasala; at least na beta one!
